MoveOn Email Of The Day

laughing DemocratsFor once, I agree….

Dear MoveOn member,

Congress is about to impose furloughs amounting to a 20% across-the-board pay cut for 800,000 federal employees, more than 44 percent of whom are veterans. And yet, where is the same 20% cut for Congress and the president? Are they not federal employees? Aren’t these the people who keep telling us that everyone must share the burden?

Yes, however I believe it’s the president who’s been doing most of the “telling”….

The across-the-board cuts set to go into effect at the end of the week will hurt the economy and they should be stopped.

But if Congress insists on cutting anyone’s salary, they should cut their own paychecks first. We pay their salaries. That’s why I created petition on’s petition site,, which says:

Any across-the-board pay cuts for federal employees must include the same pay cuts for all members of Congress and the president of the United States.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

It’s up to us to demand that if members of Congress pass these unnecessary and harmful cuts—despite overwhelming public opposition—that they start with themselves.

As an informed liberal I’m sure Diane knows (by law) the president’s salary cannot be messed with…

The President shall, at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected, and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.
US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

I’m sure President Obama does and this is probably one of the few times he totally agrees to defend the Constitution.

Maybe it’s the cynic in me, but something tells me if presidential, congressional, and senate paychecks were directly and negatively affected by their sequestration inaction, this would have solved weeks ago.

Instead of a 20% pay cut for 800,000 federal employees there should be a 20% of the 800,000 employees. Every year.

They presume they are our noble rulers. While others cannot reduce their compensation, they could each return it. Sequestration is theater for the commoners and grandstanding for the nobility. Our Republic presently lacks truly “noble” men distinguished by their acts and not their titles. No George Washington or Cincinnatus appears to be present. Omnia reliquit servare rempublicam (“He relinquished everything to save the Republic”)

Withold their wages. Garnish 100%. That’ll get some action out of those slugs.
