Let me preface this by saying I’ve met a lot of fine Christian conservatives. They are God-fearing and treat people in the manner in which they wish to be treated. I would expect nothing less and those people seldom disappoint.
However because we’re dealing with flawed human beings, this is unfortunately not universal and thus very disappointing.
In my world, politics merges with religious values every day. Whether we’re talking about marriage or reproduction, religion always finds a way to seep in and become the place where all discussion stops because we’re supposed to conduct ourselves in ways the Lord would approve. End of story. That’s all very well and good as long as we’re consistent and consistency is where many Christian conservatives unfortunately fall flat.
Don’t get me wrong. I could write an essay twice as long about liberal inconsistency and hypocrisy, but I point that out almost everyday so no need to rehash. We should be above that and to a great degree, we are not.
I’ll not waste valuable time in specifics because we all know the issues currently being debated in the public arena of ideas, but there’s one value we are taught before we learn to count: The Golden Rule.
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
— Matthew 7:12
I’ll be perfectly honest with you; I know a lot of Christian conservatives who are potentially genuinely nice people. I say potentially because while they are church-going, God-fearing Christians on one hand, they (in some cases), go out of their way to treat people like shit on the other.
You know me. I’m a creature of consistency and there’s nothing that irks me more than people who say one thing and do another. I don’t know if they figure they can go to church on Sunday, pray for forgiveness so they can feel like they’ve absolved themselves of the ill manner in which they’ve treated others, but I see this so often it bothers me because it provides the political opening for our ideological opponents to point at us and scream “See…?”
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
— 1 John 4:20
The conservatives I most respect are the ones who talk the talk and walk the walk.
These are people who on a daily basis, treat others in the manner in which they would want to be treated. Seriously, how fucking simple is this? They not only think about how they conduct their lives but how their actions affect other people around them. They don’t bully people because they can. They don’t hurt people because they can, and of course, they have a conscience so they are capable of reflection on how their actions affect others.
Personally, I’m tired of having to deal with people who talk one way, boast of their Christian morality, and then conduct their interactions with others in a very cold, heartless, and calculating way. It makes for bad politics, private and public relations, and it’s hypocritical and inconsistent.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
— Ephesians 4:32
Again, not all Christians conservatives are like this, but there are enough; some in positions of influence, be it on a national scale or personal level.
Let’s not even delve into specific issues but just center on The Golden Rule for starters. Think about how much easier it would be to deal with those other issues if we treated ourselves with dignity and respect first before engaging our political enemies.
You’d know who really has your back and you could trust.
Wow, imagine how great that could be.
