Imagine being given the option of being able to choose and pay for ONLY the stations you want to watch.
Sorry. It’ll never happen.
Aside from sports and news channels, many channels would be in serious financial peril if their customers had “choice” but are saved by the very progressive, wealth-distributive approach to entertainment. Basically, you pay regardless of the quality or value to you of the programming.
Just what do you think you’d get?
For example, less than a week after 9/11 on ABC’s Politically Incorrect, host Bill Maher said, “We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.” Advertisers subsequently fled and Maher’s show was cancelled.
Fast forward to 2012….
In a brief interview with ABC’s Jake Tapper, Bill Maher explains why calling Sarah Palin a “cunt” or a “twat,” as he has, is in no way equivalent to calling Sandra Fluke a “slut” or a “prostitute,” as Rush Limbaugh did.
Because he’s a “comedian” and comedy/satire is the default excuse when liberal entertainers cross the line and face that unexpected backlash.
“I let the audience be the guide. The bit I did about Palin using the word “cunt”, one of the biggest laughs in my act, I did it all over the country, not one person ever registered disapproval, and believe me, audiences are not afraid to let you know. Because it was a routine where that word came in at just the right moment….”
If Maher said something like this while working for a broadcast network, sponsors would be notified and the free market would play out. He’d have to go into witness protection had he used that kind of language towards a liberal woman. However, Bill Maher targets Republicans with edited impunity all the time. If he uses the c-word (and even if you could reach someone meaningful at HBO) what’s the downside? Even if you block Maher’s show and/or HBO from your TV, they still get your money, thus there’s no reason for them to adhere to any sense of decency.
For those without talent, it gets reduced to shock and cable is full of shock.
And don’t get me started on HBO’s liberal indoctrination programming aimed at children….
So while you run those cable remote laps and click past channels you never have (nor ever will stop to watch), remember you’re still paying for it. Production companies, and some of their icky “actors” and “comics” will continue to be handsomely paid, no matter how provocative, partisan, juvenile, racist, unfunny, gory, unoriginal, and intentionally insulting they decide to be as long as We the Consumer have no choice but to pay for their cable and satellite channels, whether we watch them or not.
